World War 2 and the Battle Tank

  • Tanks were important weapons during the Second World War
  • The development of the Tank was important because it determined who would win or lose battles.
  • Prior to World War 2 a new suspension system developed by the American J. Walter Christie that was known as the Christie Suspension. The Christie Suspension did not use the traditional Leaf Spring system, which improved the speed on cross country speed

  • Before World War 2 various countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, France and Italy.
  • However during the early years of the war, Germany had the advantage.
  • The Germans used a war tactic called Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg means Lighting Warfare in German and its exactly that.German Tanks processed radios within them so that they could be flexible on the Battlefield.German Military strategy stressed the use of Rapid Movement and the involvement of Tanks with Aircraft and Infantry.
  • Other forces, like the French lacked radios in 80% of their Tanks
  •  The Soviet Union had more tanks than the rest of the world combined prior, during and after the war. However the Soviet Union was not able to stop the German Invasion of their country. This was due to the Soviet Union having outdated equipment and poor commanders due to the purges of Stalin.Later in the War the Soviets were able to curb and offensive attempt made by the Germans .The most produced Tank of World War 2 is the T-34 which was made by the Soviet Union. The Battle of Kursk was the largest tank battle every to take place and it took place in the Soviet Union.
  • The U.K. was the leader in Tank design following World War 1, but they had lost this by the start of World War 2.The British did not spend significant amounts of money on a tank force.British tanks had mixed results on the Battlefield and after 1943 the British used large amounts of American Equipment.
  • The U.S.A. did not possess a large amount of tanks before the attack at Pearl Harbor. After the attack at Pearl Harbor the U.S. began to start producing tanks. The U.S. produced tanks that were of good quality and that were also reliable.By the end of World War 2 most Allied countries possessed U.S  Tanks.
